MPro brings joy

Today i¬†bought MPro for my iPhone and took few shots around .. Already moved Hueless away (to the last screen), and ticked cancelled on the list the acquisition of yet another camera – the Ricoh GRD IV – after seeing the results from MPro ! Not to mention that the (crazy) idea of B&W film and the turning one of the rooms here to a darkroom for pushing HP5+ or Tri-X – is now effectively cancelled too ! And how about if i lusted after a M9 Monochrome ūüėČ

The few below are only sharpened and some grain added for a Tri-X type of look .. i should actually increase the size of the grain even further .. Im still getting to grips with the colour filter of choice, but one thing is clear at this point – the contrast slider loves the top / very near top position!

I feel that It’s all about immediacy and instant reward + the best camera is the camera with you scenario – i know below can be achieved in PP, yet, the instant result (the 90% shoot and 10% PP) is rather a rewarding experience and at times – feeling my heart with joy. It’s like .. no it IS the opposite to a constant search for this look, the¬†spending of hours in front of screen with tools .. And yes, there is not much DR or grey gradation ¬†in these images and fine detail / micro detail¬†could be very little¬†.. The latter is something i sort of like ..

Do you shoot (a lot) monochrome in camera ?

MBA on steroids!

My mid 2013 MBA (Mavericks 10.9.4, 4GB RAM, 1.3G dual core, 128GB SSD on PCIe, Intel 5000 VRAM) has been giving me certain amount of grief, especially when it comes to external devices and certain sporadic slowdowns in various (graphic intensive) tasks. I have not experienced the horrendous stories of Mavericks and performance of recent Macs reported by so many, yet certain operations, mostly IO operations have made me quite upset with Mavericks – which seems to be the core problem in the chain – especially after the results of below actions.

Below I’m publishing what i did in the past month or so which not only recovered most of the performance issues, but also feels as if it squeezed a bit more performance from this base MBA config. In no particular order and with various degrees of effect, impossible to measure / quantify,¬†you can however take it that 1 & 2, did 90% of the work, i.e. these alone can be seen as the 80/20 approach.

NB! No explanations of how each remedy is implemented – this is just a checklist – please google for the how-tos, the success stories, the warnings, etc.

1. Switch of Spotlight completely – for the internal storage and for any SD or USB attached storage. Download and install NeoFinder free release .. Use it for finding things in place of Spotlight

2. Download & Install Memory Clean (Free on AppsStore) and set it with  threshold of 128M for Auto Clean)

3. Switch off Time Machine. Do not allow external storage to be used by Time Machine

4. Keep the internal disk / SSD at at least 10% free

5. Remove all unnecessary startup items, automation, background processing.

6. Download and install OnyX (free). Run OnyX Monthly, as prophylactics. Verify and/or Repair disk. Retouch .DS_Store files using Onyx.

7. Disable Check for Updates and Auto Updates in every app installed.

8. Download and install ImageMetaDataStripper (IMDS) and ImageOptim (IO). Both free. Run IMDS on all non-important / not for print & lower res images and IO – on high-res and important images.

9. Download and install SDFormatter. Reformat all SD cards using it !

10. Run only Safari and/or Firefox as your web browsers and try to limit the number of open tabs to <10 in each

And finally p 11 & 12 – these two are going to go ahead in this order, if my Mac gets slow and stays slow for no apparent reason, and once all above are implemented, as they are in fact as of few days. P12 will take some time to evaluate its effect though :

11. Delete system and user window server preferences and rest the PRAM
12. Disable memory compression in Mavericks

This is it .. Love for Mac rekindled here ..

Fujifilm X100S RAFs souped in RPP

It has been a long time since anything has seen light here. This post i see as a second beginning ..

X100S raws processed in RPP using a custom preset. Subsequent LR finishing included defringe, denoise, sharpening and pull / lift only. The colour, contrast, the whole render here – all courtesy of the wonderful RPP ! This time no zipper / edge jaggies noted anywhere in edges in the large outputs

X100S is firmly establishing itself as the night photography body, which brings about the idea of shooting some film in daylight, until end of this (very odd for me) year ! Film during day, X100S – at night ..

Few images to illustrate the results as of recent. Going to the office via Brixton and Mayfair before dawn can be fun..
