Searching for Moriyama

Inspired by Daido Moriyama and in attempt to arrive at something acceptable in B&W, which i like, i opted for a more “gentle Moriyama” look – milder in the technique / render, than in the subject matter – nothing much can be really xeon here in post.. I went out and then came back in – in the winter days of summer here and in the winter far north, in Vienna. And I am by now losing hope that we’ll ever have the rain stop this summer here ..

Selected few shots from this study, are included below. Unnamed at this point, but will have names one sunny day, pun intended. Cameras used were iPhone 5, Leica Minilux and Lomo LC-A – the film bodies loaded with Provia 400X.

The Silence of Absences, 2013

The camera matters not .. What matters are the absences and their light.

Hermann Niebuhr, City Chromatic

Few years back, when Karl left, I felt that the end of Jozi in art and Art in Jozi is nearing .. I also thought that i might miss him. I did, and I’m missing him badly still today.

It was then, few years back, when Hermann Niebuhr “appeared in my life”, like a wave of past Troyeville times. The inevitable happened – love at first site – the “Wim Wenders in Hillbrow” work. A work i will never forget in this life :

Hermann Niebuhr, City Chromatic

The Window, Sofia Art Gallery, 2005

I could not help it but share with you (since you are here now) this wonderful exhibit, which i attended in Sofia, possibly during my first visit back to this can-be-wonderful city, where my heart stayed behind when i left in 1991 .. It was named “The Window” and featured works by XX century fine art masters from Bulgaria – some big names in there

The selected works here, which i scanned recently, represent the works i particulalrly liked there, works which capture so well the light of Sofia : winter light, nightlight, the city light in general – the way i recall it in the 80s, and even in the late 70s, the way i want it to be when i go back one day ..

I can write pages on the works below, but i will not – over to the works to do the talking ..

Finally, keep mouse over image to see image title and details ..
